Like Nephi of Old

So, on Sunday I was giving a ride home to a woman in our ward. When we got home, she realized that she didn't have her keys. She was locked out of her house.

We drove around for a little while, out to where her husband works but the place was closed. Then we drove back to her house to see if any of her neighbors were home.

Since it was still locked, I started calling around to find a place she could wait for her husband to some home (Mia was at work). When I called a unnamed priesthood leader, he asked if I had tried to open the door with a credit card.

No... I hadn't tried that. So we did. And it worked!

I felt how Nephi must have felt when recovering the brass plates. Well... maybe not quite.

Negative Space

The concept of negative space in art is often overlooked. It's more difficult to make a piece of art that creates meaning out of the elements that it doesn't include.

I've been reading Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises this week. There are a couple of things that I like about Hemingway (in spite of criticisms). And the first is that I like his sparse style. His lack of attribution during dialog keeps you moving through the back and forth. It also allows him to play with the dialog a little more.

Second is negative space. I'm more than halfway through the book and he's now directly addressed some elements that have been defined through the negative space in the book. It was rather shocking to actually see them printed in the book. Once you realize that elements exist in the story (but not in the book), you start to take for granted that the characters have the same perspective. They are aware but don't directly address them.

I will however give one criticism of the book. Nearly every other sentence is describing what the characters are having to drink. They always seem to be drinking before, during, or after anything else that's happening in the book.

Quiet time

The last few days, Ethan has decided that naps just aren't for him. As you can imagine, this is quite a problem for Mia and I.

We keep trying to do the nap time routine but Mia's had to resort to Quiet Time instead. This consists of Ethan playing in his room for a little while and then watching a movie while Mia's in the office.

Unfortunately, it's not the same as getting a real break during the day. We are hoping he'll start taking naps again one of these days.

Kiss

I'm going to try to focus on the positive, even though Ethan has learned that he can throw tantrums. We don't give in to them (usually) but he's still throwing tantrums every chance he gets.

However, let's not dwell on that, once he's in bed and I'm holding his hand, when I ask if he wants a kiss he asks for one "on my face" and points to his lips.

It's very cute way to end our day.
