Ethan is going through an Oedipal phase right now, and tonight as he was saying good night to Mia, he decided that she should read him a book.
"Daddy needs to leave," he said, pointing to the door. Standing up to his full 3 foot frame like a tiny(er) Napoleon issues commands.
Because bedtimes have been rough of late, I agreed that I would leave. As soon as I was out the door, he ran over to give me a good night hug and kiss before slamming the door in my face.
And then immediately crying that Daddy needed to bring him his cup.
Kids are such strange little creatures.

John,
It was great to get your parents newsletter and hear the news about your family. I loved the picture. I'll have to go to your blog for more info. I can't believe it's been that long since you were in 6th grade; since Monica was in my class; since my visit in Italy and our short trip to Corfu. Where have the years gone?
All is well with me. My life revolves around my two girls who are the loves of my life. Hannah is 10 in 4th grade, and Hope is 7 in 1st grade. God is good, and I am blessed. I'm still at TR. This is my 28th year in the same classroom even. I'm older, more wrinkled, fatter, and slower, but I still love what I do.
I wish you all the best. Blessings to you, Mia, and Ethan. Your mom and dad didn't send their e-mail address with their letter. Would you please send in my way. I'd love to say hi.
Thinking of you and smiling,
Mr. "H"
I find this whole oedipal Ethan disturbing. I hope he doesn't kill you anytime soon...
Hey Mr. H! Glad you found my blog, though you came in at a rather odd post :)
What's really amazing is that the little 6th grader from your class is turning 30 this year. Ok, maybe that's not so amazing to someone one who's been there but it's daunting for me.
I can agree with you on life revolving around my son. If you read any more of my blog, you'll see that's true.
Congratulations on a long teaching career. I'm sure that the current batch of kids enjoy your class as much as I did. In fact, I was just applying for a job the other day that asked me to list some of my creative inspirations. I had a huge list of books that I've read over the years. I can attribute some of that love of reading for the support that I got in your class.
Even when I didn't seem to be able to concentrate on anything else, I knew I could most likely get through reading time without a trip to the fence ;)
Good to hear from you, I'll let me parents know that they need to get in touch.
John
